GREAT PLACES

Building healthier, greener and better-connected communities

At Barratt Redrow, we believe the places we create should help people live well every day. Great Places is our new group-wide placemaking framework, designed to make future communities more liveable, connected and close to nature.

It brings together the strongest placemaking principles from across Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes and Redrow into one measurable standard for every new development.

Our launch film introduces the thinking behind Great Places and shows how thoughtful placemaking can support healthier, more active and more connected lives.

Why Great Places matters

Great Places provides a clear, practical framework for creating communities that support healthier lives. It will guide how we design future developments, from nature-rich spaces and safe streets to local connections, inclusive places to meet and long-term stewardship.

New research commissioned by Barratt Redrow among 1,012 prospective homebuyers found that:

90%

value access to nature and wellbeing features

87%

prioritise places to go and things to do

85%

believe creating a positive legacy is important

The message is clear: a home matters, but so does the community, landscape and everyday experience around it.

The eight principles

Great Places is built around eight outcome-focused principles. Together, they provide a practical and measurable framework to guide design from concept to completion.

The eight principles

Healthy Communities • Keeping it Local • Easy to Get Around • Places to Go & Things to Do • Nature & Wellbeing • Streets for Life • Homes for All • Create a Positive Legacy

What this means in practice

Every new development will be reviewed against the Great Places framework, considering how it delivers nature-rich spaces, safe and attractive streets, walking and cycling routes, inclusive places to meet and long-term stewardship.

The aim is to make active travel easier, create spaces that bring people together, support biodiversity and ensure communities are cared for over time.

Great Places also embeds the Government-backed Building for a Healthy Life guidance into one group-wide approach, helping make liveability a consistent part of how new places are planned and delivered.

Designed around everyday life

The framework connects the quality of the home with the quality of the wider place. Streets, green spaces, local facilities and routes through a development should work together to make daily life easier, healthier and more enjoyable.

A consistent standard, applied locally

Great Places gives teams a shared framework while allowing each development to respond to its local landscape, character and community needs. The result should feel consistent in ambition, but never formulaic in execution.

Perspectives on Great Places

Customers are telling us very clearly, they want more than just a home. They want places that feel safe, connected, and close to nature.

Great Places will make it easier to walk, cycle, meet neighbours, enjoy being outdoors and feel positive about the streets where you live.

Creating inclusive spaces is absolutely vital for wheelchair users. Every child deserves the chance to play, explore and build confidence.

Our Great Places manual sets out the principles and outcomes that will guide every new Barratt Redrow community. It explains how the framework turns placemaking ambition into a practical, measurable standard for healthier, high-quality places people love to call home.
