Building sustainably
Places
Our ambition is to design and build great places that meet the highest standards, and that promote sustainable, healthy, and happy living for our customers.
We know that our customers want to live in places they are proud of, with a strong sense of community, excellent connections, attractive, well-designed streets and high-quality landscapes. We have robust and rigorous design standards for the homes we build and the places we create. The focus on placemaking within our business is promoted through the use of our internal ‘Great Places’ and ‘Redrow 8’ design standards, which inform and assess every development throughout its lifecycle.
We are currently developing a new and distinct placemaking strategy for Barratt Redrow.
Healthy communities
We ensure our developments support physical and mental health and help to improve wellbeing, by shaping environments where healthy activities and experiences are an integral part of people’s everyday lives. By connecting places with existing communities, we provide opportunities for social interaction, fitness, recreation and play for both new and existing residents.
Our placemaking guidance suggests that organised events can contribute positively to community cohesion. These include welcome events that enable people to meet their neighbours or inviting local school children to learn about construction or biodiversity. Launch events or public openings for parks and other green spaces can help optimise future use and engagement.

Inclusive play
We are committed to embedding accessible, inclusive and imaginative opportunities for play into every new community we create. In partnership with our charity partner, Whizz Kidz, we have now launched our Inclusive Play Manual to our divisions, providing guidance on delivering accessible and inclusive play environments for children of differing abilities. In 2025 we made our Manual publicly available, setting the standard for inclusive play across the housebuilding sector.

Assessment of local needs
We put our customers at the heart of everything we do. Our placemaking approaches can be used to structure and encourage engagement and communication between all relevant stakeholders; from local residents and customers to local authorities and statutory bodies, to ensure everyone’s views are taken into account.
A continuous process of community consultation from an early stage keeps local people engaged and involved in decision making. We show existing residents how they will benefit from what the development has to offer and its ability to add value to their locality.
Through focused research with potential movers and our current customers, post occupation, we continually strive to innovate and develop our house type designs, to suit a wide range of needs.
