We preserve and enhance the natural world by using resources responsibly, building resilient, low-carbon homes, and by creating places where people and nature can thrive.
Biodiversity & Nature
Progress and Focus Areas
- Comprehensive operational framework to drive delivery of the targets and ambition has been successfully embedded across all business divisions. This includes development of best practice guides such as the landscape design and delivery handbook, colleague training, calculation tools, automated data collection and a network of divisional representatives.
- This programme will continue to be evolved to suit business needs, including updated workshops, tools and materials following secondary legislation.
- We are members of the Future Homes Hub's BNG Working Group and Markets Advisory Group for Biodiversity Offsets working with stakeholders to shape the market for biodiversity offsets and give confidence to Local Planning Authorities (LPAs), developers and communities that offset delivery will provide measurable, strategic benefit to biodiversity.
Key figures
Demonstrate a minimum biodiversity net gain (BNG) across all development designs submitted for planning from January 2023.
All of sites (12 sites excluding JV's) with 10% minimum biodiversity net gain submitted for planning since Jan 2023.
Waste and Circular Economy
Progress and Focus Areas
- Bonus arrangements across the Group in FY23 once again included waste reduction targets and this will continue in FY24.
- We refreshed the awareness of the waste hierarchy as well as site best practice through new training, videos and signage.
- Several waste reduction initiatives were trialled in FY23 seeking to reduce packaging waste in collaboration with suppliers and minimise damage to building materials in transit.
- Future waste reduction initiatives will involve reviewing house designs to help drive further waste reductions :
Reduction of c. 7,500 tonnes of waste and 13% decrease in waste intensity vs FY22.
36,979 paint cans recycled (19% increase vs FY22)
392,363 pallets repatriated (7% increase vs FY22)
Key figures
Reduce construction waste intensity by 2025 vs. 2015.
FY23 Performance 39% Reduction
Maintain diversion of construction waste from landfill.
FY23 Performance
Modern Methods of Construction
Progress and Focus Areas
Last year we made further excellent progress on our MMC ambitions, far exceeding our 2025 target.|
- We conducted further trials of various MMC solutions such as advanced closed panel solutions, light weight cladding and roof casettes and have reviewed the impact of these solutions on reducing embodied carbon and waste.
- We completed construction of the Group's new 186,000 sqft Oregon Timber Frame facility at Infinity Park near Derby, enabling us to expand our growth in the use of timber frame. The facility achieves a BREEAM "Very Good" rating and an EPC "A" rating.

Deforestation
Progress and Focus Areas
- We have further improved our performance this year, achieving the best results for 2 years. In the small minority of instances where certified materials has not been obtained, we support suppliers to seek alternative supply routes.
- Going forward, we are building on this success by driving greater transparency across our supply chain, including consolidating more in-depth information on timber species, country of harvest, indirect supplier locations and details about how suppliers manage risks within their own supply chains.
- We have been working with an expert partner to understand the risk profile of our timber supply, so that we can further enhance our controls where needed.
