Barratt scores A for its CDP climate disclosure

- Barratt Developments recognised on the CDP “A list” for climate leadership and transparency
- This is the first time that Barratt has achieved an A rating for its CDP climate disclosure
Barratt Developments has been recognised for its leadership in transparency of reporting and performance on climate change by scoring an A with the leading global sustainability benchmark CDP. This is the first time that Barratt has scored an A for its climate disclosure, underlining its position as the country’s leading national sustainable housebuilder. Barratt is the top scoring company in the UK housebuilding sector across all three CDP submissions.
Based on data reported through CDP’s 2022 climate change questionnaire, Barratt is one of only 283 companies that has achieved an ‘A’ – out of nearly 15,000 companies worldwide that were rated.
The CDP score provides a snapshot of a company’s disclosure and environmental performance, allocating a score of A to D- based on the comprehensiveness of disclosure, governance, awareness and management of environmental risks and demonstration of best practices. For climate, the European regional average was B and for the global construction sector it was C.
Barratt is committed to preserving and enhancing the natural world by using resources responsibly, building resilient, low-carbon homes, and by creating places where people and nature can thrive. It was the first national housebuilder to implement science-based carbon emission targets, it will be a fully net zero business by 2040 and all of the homes it builds will be zero carbon in use from 2030.
Assessing both water and timber risk management, Barratt has also been recognised through its performance on the forests and water disclosures. Both submissions received a Management “B” grade, shared with only 197 global companies for forests, and 537 for water. Barratt is one of only three UK construction companies reporting to CDP water.
Commenting on their climate “A” score, Bukky Bird, Group Sustainability Director at Barratt Developments, said: “CDP is one of the most comprehensive and widely used frameworks, relied on by many of our stakeholders and investors. We know there is more to do, but we are delighted to be recognised for our leadership disclosure on climate risks and opportunities. Our performance within CDP helps underline our commitment to our sustainability objectives and our position as the leading national sustainable housebuilder.”
Dexter Galvin, Global Director of Corporations and Supply Chains at CDP, said: “Congratulations to all the companies on this year’s A List; environmental transparency is the first vital step towards a net- zero and nature-positive future. In a year of ever-increasing environmental concerns around the world – from extreme weather to unprecedented losses to nature – the need for transformational, urgent and collaborative change is more critical than ever. As CDP continues to raise the bar on what qualifies as climate, forests and water leadership, we hope to see the ambitions and actions of companies on the A List – and those wanting a place on it – do the same”.
The CDP is an international non-governmental organization which encourages companies to measure and disclose their environmental information. CDP holds the largest environmental database in the world, and CDP scores are widely used to drive investment and procurement
decisions towards a zero carbon, sustainable and resilient economy. CDP is a founding member of the Science Based Targets initiative.
