Barratt Developments in the 2010s – its achievements
As the 2010s finish Barratt Developments looks back at what it has achieved over the last decade.
Most importantly, it has built over 150,000 high quality homes, increasing its output by 57% over the last 10 years. At a time when housing numbers have been at historic lows, with the country urgently requiring more new homes, Barratt has helped answer that need.
It has continued to set new standards over this time. As well as becoming the only major national housebuilder to be rated 5 star for customer satisfaction for 10 years in a row, Barratt won 831 NHBC Pride in the Job Quality awards – more than any other housebuilder every year for the entire decade.
It has also been one of the largest providers of affordable homes. With affordability becoming an important issue over the last 10 years, it has delivered over 28,000 affordable homes – 19% of all the homes it built during 2010-2019.
With sustainability quickly rising up the agenda this decade, Barratt planted or retained some 4 million trees or shrubs. It also created or retained 3,400 hectares of green space, reduced its carbon intensity by 20% and set up an innovative partnership with the RSPB to help give nature a home at its developments. With a clear aim of becoming the country’s most sustainable housebuilder, Barratt will continue to work hard on achieving this in the 2020s.
Barratt has also grown as a business over this time. Back in 2010 it employed just over 4,100 people, whereas now it has 6,500 employees, a rise of 58%. Of these, 7% are graduates, apprentices or trainees, and it has a clear commitment to invest and grow the future talent of the housebuilding industry.
It has also supported almost 500,000 jobs across the wider housebuilding industry. Together with making £3.75bn in contributions to support local communities and investing £8.6bn in new land for homes, Barratt has played an important part in helping the country to grow over the last 10 years.
David Thomas, chief executive of Barratt Developments, said: “Over the past decade we are proud to have built our position as the country’s leading housebuilder. We have delivered more homes, have the highest quality, the best design and the happiest customers. Into the 2020s we will continue to strive to lead the future of the industry by putting the customer at the heart of everything we do.”
