Setting the pace for sustainability

Setting the pace for sustainability
Barratt Developments has been recognized as the country’s top sustainable housebuilder by picking up four leading industry awards in the space of just three months. Since October Barratt has:
- Won sustainable housebuilder of the year – at the Housebuilder magazine awards
- Named sustainable developer of the year at the What House awards
- Achieved the highest score for any UK housebuilder at the global carbon disclosure project (CDP)
- Been awarded gold in the Next Generation Sustainability Index with a score of 81.7% – the top score for any major national housebuilder
In the judges’ comments at the What House awards, they highlighted, “the determination to be sustainable not only influences the homes that the company builds, but permeates its entire business model – making Barratt Developments a deserved winner.” The judges continued by saying: “the company’s approach to sustainability is based on hard facts rather than hypotheses.”
These facts include:
- Built 5,544 homes which achieved the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 or above
- Delivered 1,053 homes that scored Code Level 4, and 53 which achieved Code Level 6
- Recycled 94% of waste on site
- Connected 1,100 homes to low-carbon heat networks
- Planted or retained some 555,000 trees and shrubs, and created a further 634 acres of new green space and public or private gardens
- Established a ground breaking initiative with the RSPB, setting a new benchmark for nature-friendly housing developments
This month Barratt achieved second place overall – and top for all national housebuilders – in the 2015 Next Generation Sustainability Index. The index assesses the sustainability credentials of housebuilders across the UK and challenges them to improve their performance. Barratt achieved a score of 81.7% and won gold for the second year in a row.
Last month Barratt was ranked by the CDP as the country’s top housebuilder. The CDP is an international non-governmental organization which encourages companies to measure and disclose their environmental information. This year’s score of 99 out of 100 is evidence of just how important Barratt sees its commitment to improving the environment and being a sustainable homebuilder.
