Barratt Redrow Opens First Inclusive Play Area at Frenchay Park
20/08/2026 Community Developments
We have officially opened our first inclusive play area at Frenchay Park, near Bristol, creating a space where children of all ages and abilities can play, explore and interact together.
Watch: Our first inclusive play area opening
The new facility represents an important milestone in our commitment to delivering communities that are accessible, welcoming and inclusive for everyone. Designed with a focus on shared experiences, the play area enables disabled and non-disabled children to enjoy the space alongside one another.
The project forms part of our Great Places placemaking framework, which promotes the creation of healthy, inclusive and sustainable communities through principles including Healthy Communities, Homes for All and Creating a Positive Legacy.
Developed in collaboration with leading youth disability charity Whizz Kidz, the play area was shaped by input from young wheelchair users and accessibility experts. Their insights helped inform every aspect of the design, ensuring the space delivers a genuinely inclusive play experience rather than simply incorporating accessible equipment.
By considering how children move around the play area, interact with one another and participate in shared activities, the design encourages children of all abilities to play together in the same environment.
The opening comes as research highlights the barriers many families continue to face when accessing outdoor play spaces. More than half of parents of children with disabilities report that their child has been excluded from play because playgrounds are inaccessible, underlining the need for more inclusive community facilities.
Frenchay Park is the first inclusive play area to open following our commitment that every planning application submitted from January 2026 will include an inclusive and accessible play area.
To celebrate the opening, representatives from Whizz Kidz, including members of the charity's Youth Board and Whizz Kidz Collective, joined Barratt Redrow colleagues and project partners for a special launch event. The occasion provided an opportunity to hear directly from the young people whose lived experiences helped shape the development and who continue to champion accessibility and inclusion across the UK.
The new play area provides a welcoming space where children can build friendships, develop confidence and enjoy the benefits of play, regardless of ability.
