- New campaign to reduce the number of children living in temporary accommodation
The country’s largest homebuilder, Barratt Redrow, has become an official supporter of 165,000 Reasons, the campaign to raise awareness about the growing crisis of children living in unsuitable temporary accommodation.
165,000 Reasons is a national umbrella campaign, designed to tackle the growing crisis of children living in poor-quality temporary accommodation. It is built on a simple belief: temporary accommodation for children should be treated with the same urgency as other national emergencies.
Barratt Redrow is backing the campaign by contributing sponsorship and its housing expertise to help raise awareness, support practical solutions and drive long-term reform.
Across England the stark reality is that over 165,000 children do not have a stable place to call home. Worryingly, since the campaign team came together last year, the number affected has continued to rise and now stands at over 176,000 and rising by more than 10,000 per year – equivalent to one child roughly every hour.
This is why Barratt Redrow is joining a growing group of organisations across both public and private sectors to push for practical action on better standards and faster routes into stable homes for children.
David Thomas, chief executive of Barratt Redrow, said: “Backing 165,000 Reasons is simply the right thing to do. As the country's largest homebuilder we know the vital importance of having a safe, stable place to call home. No child should grow up in temporary accommodation for extended periods, and tackling this challenge requires government, housing providers, businesses and charities to work together on practical solutions that deliver lasting change."
Nick Kilby, founder of Cratus Group and 165,000 Reasons, added: “I am delighted that Barratt Redrow has joined 165,000 Reasons as a supporter – the first of many major housebuilders. Their reach, expertise and leadership within the housing sector will be invaluable in helping us move from awareness to practical action. New homes are desperately needed to ensure children across England live in a safe, stable family environment, where they can grow and thrive.”
Last year the Barratt Redrow Foundation, the company’s charitable arm, set up a dedicated homelessness fund, providing £1 million over three years supporting young people who are already homeless or at risk of homelessness.
